304 stainless steel

The standard food-grade steel for bottles and flasks. Safe, durable, sensible — the right answer for most school and office programmes.

316 stainless steel

Adds molybdenum for corrosion resistance. For bottles the practical difference shows near the sea: salt air is harder on rims, threads and welds. Costs more — pay it for coastal or heavy-duty use, not automatically.

A honest caveat: grade markings are only as trustworthy as the seller. For retail buys, that's a reason to favour established sellers; for bulk orders, it's exactly what sampling and pre-shipment checks are for.

Single-wall steel

Light, cheap per unit, unbreakable — the workhorse for schools, staff programmes and giveaways. No insulation: cold drinks stay cold-ish, hot ones don't.

Vacuum insulated

Double wall with a vacuum gap — holds heat and cold for hours. Heavier and pricier; makes sense for gifting, travel and staff welfare, overkill for a school desk.

Seams and rimRun a finger around the rim and inner seam: smooth is right. Rough welds collect grime and signal thin material.

Do steel bottles need the SLS mark?
The April 2026 rule as published targets plastic drinking bottles (SLS 1616) and polymer feeding bottles (SLS 1306); stainless steel bottles sit outside it. Import rules can depend on product type and classification — for commercial quantities, verify with the relevant authorities or a customs professional first. Background: SLS rules guide.
Is steel safer than glass?
Different, not better. Steel wins on breakage and weight; glass wins on visibility (you can see it's clean) and taste neutrality. Both avoid the plastic question entirely. Honest comparison: here.
Will a steel bottle rust?
304 steel normally doesn't in daily use. Rust complaints usually trace to scratched cheap "stainless" of unknown grade, damaged seams, or salt-air exposure at the coast — one more reason the grade claim (and buying from sellers who honour returns) matters.
