The state-sector rule does not automatically apply to hotels

Sri Lanka's 31 May 2026 measure concerns state institutions. Hotels and other private businesses should make their own operational and procurement decisions and verify any separate requirements that apply to them. The April 2026 SLS requirements are relevant when specified reusable plastic drinking bottles are being placed on the Sri Lankan market.

Start with where the bottle will be used

Restaurants & banquetsTable handling, washing turnaround, breakage and storage may matter more than empty-bottle unit price.

Materials

Trade-offs, not a universal answer

Glass

Transparent and well suited to some fixed-service settings, but breakage and washing compatibility need testing in the actual property workflow.

Stainless steel

Impact resistant and suitable for some staff or outdoor uses. Confirm grade, finish, cleaning instructions and any branding method rather than relying on a generic steel claim.

Compliant plastic

Lightweight and practical in some settings. If the product falls within SLS 1616 scope, verify current certification requirements.

Pilot

Test the full service cycle before rollout

Run representative samples through filling, room or table use, collection, washing, drying and storage. Record breakage, cap loss, leaks, rack fit, cleaning time and guest/staff handling. The sample should match the model you intend to order.

Build quantity from bottles in service, bottles in washing/turnaround and a separately agreed replacement allowance. Do not use a generic “bottles per room” formula as a substitute for observing your workflow.

Branding

Brand only after the bottle is approved

Printing or engraving can be explored after the base product has passed the operational trial. Confirm artwork, durability, sample approval, packaging and reorderability before the main run. See the custom bottle guide.
