Warm water + a spoon of baking soda, left overnight. Rinse well in the morning. Repeat for stubborn smells — it almost always wins.
Limescale → vinegar or lemon
The cloudy white film from hard water dissolves in a soak of vinegar or lemon juice and warm water. Rinse thoroughly after.
Narrow necks → the rice trick
A little uncooked rice + soapy water, shaken hard, scrubs where brushes can't reach. Old trick, still the best one.

Thermal shockSoda-lime glass (most budget bottles) hates sudden temperature swings: never pour boiling water into a cold bottle. Warm it gradually. Only borosilicate handles heat directly — check your listing.

The freezer, fullWater expands as it freezes — a full bottle in the freezer is a cracked bottle. If you chill bottles, leave generous headspace.

When to retire a bottle

Retire the bottle if you find any chip on the rim or base, or any crack — especially inside the wall. Chips on the rim are where your mouth touches; cracks propagate with every wash and bump. A bottle that fails this check goes to the recycling bin, not the school bag.
Everything else — cloudiness that won't scrub off, a scratched cap, a tired sleeve — is cosmetic. Replace parts where the seller offers them and the glass body keeps going.
